Two Opportunities to Crew!

Escape winter and come to the warm waters of the Windward Islands

The Joy of Sailing Carib is designed to give our friends & family and Individual women opportunities to sail with us during the cold Chicago winter. Since we are an ALL Women’s Sailing Program in Chicago, we generally don’t have our manly friends aboard but TJOS Carib F&F sails can include men! Our Women Who Sail opportunities are indeed for women only.

Crewing aboard Life Aquatic is comfortable and easy. Our daily schedule is tailored to our desire to sail, swim, snorkel, and tour the island(s) by land. As crew you’ll gain experience sailing, navigating, anchoring, handling the dinghy, cooking and cleaning up…all with the leadership and support of your Captain, Lynda Stephens! AND get ready for some great sea life; turtles, fishes, lobsters and more.

This is a great opportunity to gain days at sea for your captain’s license or the experience to someday do a bareboat charter!

Crew Opportunities

Friends and family crew

Your crew time is 8 days and 7 nights. Again, this may be customizable. You will fly in and out of the same country except where noted. See the Schedule for availability. Unlike our "Women Only" program in Chicago, these F&F opportunities are for guys and gals!

We already know our friends and family so we will be sure that although experience is not required, we do have at least one of our F&F acting as 1st Mate. See below for info regarding Responsibilities, Expenses and required forms.

Women only crew

The WO  crew most often helps move the boat from port to port and then is aboard to enjoy sailing and touring time. This can mean flying into one country and out another. As crew, you will already have experience sailing…maybe not navigating, but definitely holding a course. See below for info regarding Responsibilities, Expenses and required forms.

Knowing anchoring, tides, currents, daily navigation, weather apps and the like, we can teach. Yes, there is a test. In fact, to be sure it’s a good fit for all, there is a virtual interview process. This works really well as a get-to-know each other and helps us determine crew selection. See Crew Responsibilities below for more detail on crew duties.

Crew Responsibilities

As always, crew responsibilities will fit the experience of the crew. With that in mind, here’s an idea of the tasks we do:

  • Prep boat for sailing

  • Make meals

  • Go ashore for provisions (food etc)

  • Prepare navigation plan

  • Lift anchor

  • Unfurl sails

  • Helm course (we do have autopilot)

  • Arrange mooring or drop anchor

  • Cleanup; after meals

  • Raise/Lower Dinghy

  • Install motor on Dinghy

  • Lock Dinghy at night and when tied up ashore

  • Haul and fill water tanks

  • Check fluids (oil, coolant, propane, water)

  • Trash to shore

To be fair, all crew will participate but we are aware not everyone will do every task. Figuring out responsibilities will be discussed once on board.

Expenses

This depends on the number of crew members, how fancy the food is, how many islands we visit and so on. Capt. Lynda will discuss this with you during your call to organize dates.

Crew Liability Waiver & Medical Form

All crew must sign a waiver and complete a medical form. This is a requirement by the insurance company. Forms will be sent to you under separate cover.
